Red Banana Passion Flower. Very beautiful and desirable. Guaranteed to be the true species, this cool-growing passionflower has 4" iridescent red flowers that hang from sometimes extremely long peduncles that can be 18" or more. Attracts hummingbirds and produces edible, flavorful fruit. Will not tolerate hot climates where the temperature is routinely over 85 degrees, but will tolerate more heat if it doesn't last more than a couple of days. Plants that have been grafted to heat-tolerant rootstocks have reportedly done very well in hot climates. Afternoon shade is recommended. Will tolerate a slight frost.
Subgenus: Passifora, Supersection: Tacsonia.
Light: Full sun (in mild climates), part shade (particularly afternoon shade in warmer areas)
Soil: A wide range of soil, but it must be well-drained.
Fertilizer: A slow-release, bloom-booster type fertilizer is appreciated, but beware of using a fertilizer with too much nitrogen as it may push leaves at the expense of flowers.
Hardiness: Zone 9.
