Tree Jockey. This succulent shrublet with pendant, tubular red flowers, and fleshy green leaves usually grows in the branches of trees in its native South Africa. Good for bonsai, it also develops a decorative swollen base. It blooms in the winter to bring extra interest during the short days. Copious bright red flowers can be hand-pollinated to produce edible berries that are said to taste like figs, but I thought tasted more like dried prunes. In mild climates, it can even be grown on tree branches under filtered sun.
