Passiflora 'Blue Velvet' 4" pot

Blue Velvet Passion Flower. Strongly fragrant. Very similar to the famous hybrid P. 'Incense', but without the harmful virus. The corona is long and wavy and banded with dark purple. One of the more cold tolerant Passiflora, it may sucker from the roots if the top is damaged by frost. The attractive vine is very vigorous and tolerant of hot summers.

Note:  There are many plants labeled as Passiflora 'Blue Velvet' that are being sold by large wholesale nurseries which are actually Passiflora 'Fata Confetto.'  This has lead to a lot of confusion. This is the true Passiflora 'Blue Velvet' bred by Roland Fischer.

(P. incarnata x P. cincinnata) Subgenus: Passiflora.  Roland Fischer's hybrid.

Light: Full sun, part shade.

Water: Moderate.

Soil: A wide range of soil, but it must be well-drained.

Fertilizer: A slow-release, bloom-booster type fertilizer is appreciated, but beware of using a fertilizer with too much nitrogen as it may push leaves at the expense of flowers.

Hardiness: Zone 9, but possibly lower in a protected site.

Great Personality

For shear personality, this has been my favorite. It clearly doesn't like wind as it grows steadily away from the prevailing breeze. Tons of medium/large bright purple flowers with mild scent. Likes to bloom in two's and three's all over the vine. Always 8-14 more buds getting ready to open on each branch. I have it growing into a red bougainvillea and all over my orchid wall. The orchids love the shade as do the bromiliads.
