Passiflora incarnata 4" pot

Maypop. One of the most frost-hardy of all passion flowers, P. incarnata has lovely, medium-sized flowers that are lavender and mauve with long curly filaments banded with white. With a different passion vine to pollinate it, P. incarnata will produce sweet, edible fruit that is prized by many as the most delicious of any passion fruit.

It is an herbaceous species that will regrow every year from the roots. Will not tolerate water-logged soil. Excellent food plant for Heleconius butterflies.

Subgenus: Passiflora, Supersection: Passiflora, Section: Passiflora.

Light: Full sun, part shade.  There will be less flowers in part shade.

Water: Moderate.

Soil: A wide range of soil, but it must be well-drained.

Fertilizer: A slow-release, bloom-booster type fertilizer is appreciated, but beware of using a fertilizer with too much nitrogen as it may push leaves at the expense of flowers.

Hardiness: Zone 7 provided that the soil is very well-drained.  It is especially important that Maypop does not stay wet and cold at the same time.  Good hardiness has been experienced by growers in wet climates by planting the vine under the eves of the house in order to keep the roots drier during the winter.
