Passiflora metae 4" pot

Size

Very rare, new species only described in 2016. Large, pendant white and purple flowers on a lovely vine. The leaves are glossy green with two prominent, bright yellow petiole glands that are designed to look like butterfly eggs.  This clever strategy fools a butterfly looking for a food plant for her caterpillars into thinking the vine is already infested with eggs! Edible fruit is produced if pollinated with a different plant's pollen.

Not a lot is known about the cultivation requirements for such a new species, but since it's native to high elevation Columbia, it's reasonable to protect it from frost until we know more about it's tolerances.  As always, please let me know your experience growing this beautiful species!

Subgenus: Passiflora, Supersection: Laurifolia, Section: Laurifoliae.

Light: Full sun, part shade.  There will be less flowers in part shade.

Fertilizer: A slow-release, bloom-booster type fertilizer is appreciated, but beware of using a fertilizer with too much nitrogen as it may push leaves at the expense of flowers.
