Subgenus Passiflora

Passiflora caerulea 'Dolce Italia' 4" pot

Dolce Italia Passion Flower.  This lovely form has pure white flowers on a vine that is just as vigorous and easy to grow as the Blue Crown Passion Flower.  The flowers have a delicious, fruity fragrance that smells like guavas.  Hardy to 15 degrees F!  If the top is damaged by frost, it will sprout from underground, tuberous roots.  This is a very large vine, so it will need a lot of room.  It is ideal for covering fences and screens rapidly.

Subgenus: Passiflora.

Although P. c. 'Dolce Italia' appears to be similar to P. 'White Wedding,' in person they are very different. P. c. 'Dolce Italia' is much more delicate with a fruity fragrance, while P. 'White Wedding' has larger flowers with thicker, spongier petals and thicker filaments. The P. 'White Wedding' also has a larger, huskier vine and is less cold-hardy.

Light: Full sun, part shade.  There will be less flowers in part shade.

Water: Moderate.

Soil: A wide range of soil, but it must be well-drained.

Fertilizer: A slow-release, bloom-booster type fertilizer is appreciated, but beware of using a fertilizer with too much nitrogen as it may push leaves at the expense of flowers.

Hardiness: Zone 8 or lower in a sheltered site.
